GHOST FLEET ROLLER DERBY

Est. 2022

On the night of January 5, 2022, in Hampton, Virginia, a small group of dedicated skaters banded together to form Ghost Fleet Roller Derby.
Our founding members believed it was important to have a true “for the skaters, by the skaters” organization and set out to build a league on the foundation of integrity, respect, and inclusivity.

MISSION

To develop a strong, courageous, and athletic community through the sport of roller derby. We strive to inspire future generations of roller derby athletes to be independent, body-positive, community-minded, and to embrace inclusivity.

VISION

To build a foundation of courageous skaters, officials, volunteers, and fans who love the sport of roller derby.

VALUES

GFRD members recognize the common values that unite us: Commitment, Integrity, Respect, Inclusivity, & Honoring the Sport.

GENDER STATEMENT

GFRD welcomes trans and gender-expansive athletes – regardless of their pronouns or gender presentation – who feel most comfortable playing women’s flat track roller derby. We align with the WFTDA Diversity and Inclusion statement and the WFTDA Statement About Gender.

Origins of Our Name

Ghost Fleet Roller Derby Pays Homage

to the James River Reserve Fleet (JRRF)

Known locally as the “Ghost Fleet”, the JRRF is “the oldest of the eight original National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) sites, and one of only three that are still in operation.” For more information on the original “Ghost Fleet” check out this article on “A Haunting in Hampton Roads” from our local Mariners’ Museum.
